Can Ultra and Faze Stay at the Top? Can OpTic Get Back to the Top Four?

#12 Vegas Legion – The Legion started the season with a clutch 3-2 win over the Rokkr where their SnD looked great and went 2-0 in that mode on that day. Since then, they’ve gone 2-6 in the mode which is not ideal by any means, if that was meant to be their best mode. They showed some life in Hardpoint as they dominated a talented OpTic team on Skidrow. Overall, they’ve still lost doubled their wins but that’s probably their best mode now. Their Control is horrible, the worst in the league. The slaying has been an issue as Attach is the only player with a positive KD and Purj, the rookie has a bottom 2 KD at a 0.83. It’s been a tough start to this season and it’ll be hard for this team to not get a top-12 finish in Major 1.

#11 Carolina Royal Ravens – Carolina has been an absolute mess. They’ve already made an official change, the first of the CDL season as they dropped GodRx for Felo. They dropped GodRx for his performance and slaying as he had a 0.77 KD, and Felo has a 0.76 KD through his first two games with the team. They’ve been forced to also add TJHaLy as ReeaL has had visa issues and TJ has actually played relatively well and could make a positive impact in their SnD at LAN. They will need help in that mode as they’re horrible at 1-9, probably the worst in the league at that mode. It’s worth mentioning how well Gwinn has played as he has been one of the top rookies for sure despite the team's struggles as he has a 1.10 KD, it’ll be interesting to see if he can translate the success at LAN.

#10 Los Angeles Thieves – Continuing the trend of the worst at a game mode, this time it’s the worst Hardpoint team in the league with a whopping record of 1-10. This team has an even record at a SnD and has been a positive team in Control by a slim margin. The issues with this team are simple, it’s the lack of teamwork and overall slaying as all four players have a negative KD and are towards the bottom overall, it’s been tough in Hardpoint especially. You’d expect this team to be solid in that mode as their sub duo both have a lot of talent and Ghosty is known for good communication and objective work. There is hope this team can perform better once they get to LAN among the crowd and chaos but if they don’t pick it up in Hardpoint it will be an early exit for LAT.

#9 Los Angeles Guerrillas – This team has been credited for their teamwork and commitment to playing together and learning the game as a team. This has resulted in some solid performances as they’ve won a pair of and been competitive in some other games on top of that. That itself was a little surprising as they had low expectations and have somewhat succeeded them. The issue is that the last two games this past weekend was very bad for the Guerrillas as they went 0-2 and 0-6 in map count as they got swept in back-to-back games. The issue has been consistency as the players have swerved from great performances to extremely low performances where they get slammed. The most consistent player for LAG is for sure Diamondcon as he has looked great and has shown why he should’ve got a spot in the last season. They’re not particularly horrible in any game mode just have to find some consistency.

#8 Seattle Surge – Before the season had even begun, many believed this would be a SnD specialist team that could struggle in respawn and so far, it’s been relatively accurate. It hasn’t been downright abysmal in respawn, Hardpoint has been okay at 5-8 which control is a little worse than that at 2-5. SnD is much better at 6-3, what’s even more intriguing is that they’re 0-3 on Karachi. This means they’re undefeated on the other four SnD maps. Karachi could become an auto veto for them at the major considering they have not had any success on the map in that mode. Another issue for Hardpoint is their map pool, they have a clear favorite in Terminal which they’re 3-1 and will probably get vetoed by the opposing team, and they have two big weaknesses in Invasion and Skidrow where they’re 0-3 in both maps. A limited map pool could hinder them greatly if their SnD doesn’t keep bailing them out, regardless they have to win some respawns to make it further into the tournament.

#7 Boston Breach – The Boston Breach has been slightly disappointing in terms of their overall record and the fact they’re starting in the losers’ bracket considering they were looked at in the pre-season as perhaps the fifth-best team in the CDL. While it hasn’t gone great this team has competed with the best teams and even some of their records are somewhat skewed. They have a 3-6 SnD record which was surprising considering the players on the team, especially Slasher who is always a part of good SnD teams. It’s worth noting 4 of those 6 losses are against Faze and the Subliners which are the two very best teams in that game mode. They also took those teams to game 5 where they came up short, they also swept the Toronto Ultra which was shocking. Clearly, this team can compete and give anyone fits, they just got off to a very slow start and have to start beating the lower-level teams at a more consistent pace and they could be set up for a solid losers’ bracket run in their home major.

#6 Minnesota Rokkr – This team could not have gotten off to a worse start as they were 0-4 and were getting a ton of criticism that was well deserved as they just couldn’t get any momentum going, especially in SnD. The one player at that time who was performing consistently well was rookie SMG Lynz. Players were underachieving, none more than Owakening, who was known for slaying ability, has really struggled and even now his KD only sits at a 0.87, way too low when he’s expected to be a player to sit over a 1.00 comfortably. Regardless they have started to put it all together and have won 3 straight games with a total map count of 9-2. What a quick turnaround and while it’s a tough matchup in round one of winners against the Subliners, it’s still been impressive. Their map pool for Hardpoint is solid as they have three maps with multiple wins, their pool for SnD needs to expand however as they only have two maps with any wins on it whatsoever.

#5 OpTic Texas – Pretty shocking to not see this team in the top four, even if they’re just right behind the top four but their talent says top 3, top 2 without a doubt. Signing a superstar like Pred and a vet/leader in Kenny gave the OpTic fans much to be excited about. Now, it’s only been one split before the actual tournament but to see their map record at 14-13 is odd and has to be attributed to teamwork and discipline issues. Too many times has this team left a lane open and got flipped on a Hardpoint or left a pinch open in SnD, things that can certainly be worked on at least. Their team KD’s still look good as three of them are positive and only Shotzzy just barely sits under a 1.00 at a 0.98. So it makes sense that the game mode they’re struggling in is SnD. They are just 3-6 in that mode and have no more than one win on any map and they haven’t even played a SnD on Skidrow, which they might have to try considering their struggles. It’s usually an issue when a team has an auto veto and this team has three as they also have not played Sub Base Hardpoint or Invasion Control. They have to expand their map pool and even in Hardpoint, 6 of their 7 map wins have come from two maps which one would most likely be vetoed and the last time they played one of those maps, Skidrow, they got slammed by the Vegas Legion. So there are a handful of issues the team is going through, but their talent and return to LAN could be what they need to break the barrier and start competing with the top of the league.

#4 Miami Heretics – How about the Miami Heretics, the team that went through a rebrand has been amazing to start the season. The teamwork has been on point, these guys communicate and listen so well to each other. This team doesn’t have the highest KD average as a team at all, below a team like OpTic and yet they’ve had more success and have a map record of 18-8. They’re good in all game modes, probably the best Control team in the league at 6-1 and undefeated on Invasion and Karachi. They have won on all Hardpoint maps and only have one map with a losing record at 1-2 which is Terminal. Their SnD sits at 5-3 and if there is one critique for this team it could be their map pool size. They’re 3-1 on Invasion and 1-1 on both Skidrow and Terminal and that’s it. They’ve only played 3 maps in SnD as they have not yet played Highrise or Karachi. So if teams veto Invasion SnD and overall as they’re good in all game modes on that map, it could lead to some issues for teams but if they play a team that does have auto vetoes that don’t include Invasion, they should be in a good spot.

#3 New York Subliners – The defending world champions have been great this season at 6-1 and a great map count at 18-11. Slaying has not been an issue at all with Skyz having a 1.15, near the top of the league, HyDra is 3rd for the SMGs at a 1.11, and Sib has been putting up insane damage numbers and sits at a 1.07. KiSMET’s KD seems a bit low at a 0.93 but everyone knows he turns up at LAN so that should shoot up over the weekend. So why is this team here and not the top 2 as the defending champs? It’s certainly not because of their SnD, they’re 9-1 in that game mode with their only loss coming against Toronto, during the 0-3 loss. They have yet to play Invasion but they’ve been so good and consistent on the other maps that it almost doesn’t matter that it’s been getting vetoed. The concerns for this team have been in the respawn. Hardpoint has been solid at 7-5, just a small map pool as they’re winless on Sub Base and Terminal which one of them is almost definitely going to get into a series which could be an issue. The bigger issue is their Control, they’re 2-5. That’s tied for second worse and they have a losing record on every map in that mode. Their biggest need for improvement and obviously they can win games in spite of that but once it gets to the other top teams and even a potential grand final, they’re going to have to improve on that mode.

#2 Toronto Ultra – The Toronto Ultra could easily be number 1 in these rankings and are pretty much 1B. Simply put they’re the best respawn team in the game at the moment. A whopping 9-1 in Hardpoin have been borderline untouchable in that game mode and are undefeated on three maps. They are 0-1 in Terminal and have not played a Skidrow in a match which is worth mentioning but it’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t be successful in those maps as well. Their slaying has been incredible with three of their players sitting at or over a 1.10 with Envoy just under with a 1.06. It feels like some teams just aren’t shooting back when they get matched up in Hardpoint against the Ultra. One of the best control teams as well as they sit at 5-2 with their only two losses in Highrise which could be an auto veto for at least this event which makes perfect sense. If there is one game mode that hasn’t been up to par in terms of the standards of Toronto, it’s SnD as they’re 4-3. A bigger concern than just the record overall is that they only have wins on two maps which you would have to assume their opponent is going to veto one of those two maps. Regardless this team has been incredible, a good argument for the best in the game, and should be great on LAN.

#1 Atlanta Faze – For now taking the number 1 spot has to be Atlanta Faze as they’re currently the only undefeated team in the CDL, sitting at 7-0. With a mind-numbing map count of 21-5, they’ve been insanely elite. aBeZy has been doing aBeZy things playing extremely aggressively with a 1.04 KD and a SnD KD at 1.33. The addition of Drazah has proven to be great as expected, he’s been a perfect addition and is playing great and slaying as well sitting at a KD of 1.08 and having a Control KD of 1.18. Cellium continues to be the most consistent player in the CDL as he has been the last three years and leads the league in KD at 1.27 and the best SnD KD in the world at a whopping 1.78, he also has the best control KD at a 1.36. Simp is probably the best player in the game at this time, he had received some criticism which I felt was unwarranted but regardless he has risen right back to MVP status has been using both guns, and has been incredible so far this year sitting at second best in KD behind his teammate with a 1.20. Simp has a top 10 KD in all three game modes and is number 2 in Hardpoint. Very consistent and speaking of consistency it’s their game modes. 8-2 in Hardpoint with wins on every map and undefeated on two maps and it is worth noting they’re literally perfect when it comes to clutch games in Hardpoint. Control sits at 5-2 tied for second with Toronto and just behind Miami with Highrise being their best so far. Their SnD is neck and neck with the Subliners as the best in the league at 8-1 and undefeated on three maps and win’s on four of them. This team has been consistent and great and considering the talent on this team, it could get even better on LAN.
